This book is about what I expected given her professional conduct, stature, and statements. Let me first note that the negative review in Opera News was a gross mischaracterization. Yes, she does praise herself, but no more than others, and she does it in such a manner as to make the larger point that opera has internalized its hated status in the broader public and academia. She is saying that opera needs to go back to being the venerated art form it was before 1930.That is why there is a certain forced posturing in her self praise and praise of opera institutions. She is echoing opera’s glory days of old. She is reminding us to advocate for opera against the attacks and slights.Opera is essentially dead in America and Italy, with about a 1% fan base, and it is getting worst in Germany. Unless opera lovers come out of the shadows, this situation won’t start to change.She says that opera is a high art form that engages the intelligence, as opposed to, apparently, pop music, with its greater catharsis. We need to go back to the traditional mind-based elitism. Having fun is fine, but not to the disparagement of the mind, which has become common. Rationalism was overthrown during the period from the “roaring twenties†to the brain-dead ‘60s. This is my explanation and defense of her self praise.Now let me get to more precise issues in the book as regards her life. The book is divided into three basic parts: 1) her childhood/student years, 2) her rapid assent, and then 3) a detailed discussion of her professional years.Part one is interesting in that the reader gets detailed descriptions of life in communist, and poor, Romania. Her extreme talent was discovered early.Part two simply describes her discovery by musical luminaries in the West, and her first performances. In this section we learn how she discovered her fac, and how overwhelming she was to so many leaders and opera fans. This is the section that contains her rhetorical self praise. Trust me, it’s much more about the state of opera than about her, and certainly should not be seen as blind ego mania, as the Opera News reviewer distainfully argues.Part thee is by far the best in that we get to see the real Angela, and her deep experiences of music and the many people she worked, lived, loved, and played with. She is almost unrelenting in her devotion to opera and people at all levels of music and life. Her writing here is as passionate and engaging as she is on stage. You can tell that the same woman lived an equal passion for both art and life. Her insights into the many good and bad peoples she describes is alone worth the price of the book. She describes vividly how people can be both grand and unbelievably petty. She doesn’t dwell on the petty, but when she does, they are zingers. By far the dominant impression one has from her life is her perseverance, and her love of the art of life. A wonderful insiders view of a great artist engaged by her art.Regarding the general condition of the opera world and it’s demise, see the book, “Human Sin or Social Sin†by Paul Dachslager. This book provides a detailed description of the social and moral forces that have killed the high arts in general, and what can be done about it.
A hugely entertaining piece of self-promotion, about as modest as Donald Trump. Previous reviewers are absolutely correct, this is a book that Angela worshippers must read. She has always been a singer with a gorgeous sound but with an unfortunately immature and unpleasant personality, much like Kathy Battle.
I enjoyed reading Angela’s book. I am a big fan of hers and have gone out my way to see her in New York, Washington and even in Munich. The book gave me a lot of insight into her private life starting from childhood and continuing on to the time of the book publishing. Well worth a reading.
